ABSTRACT An infant restraint device has a generally rigid shell assembly for receiving an infant, the shell assembly having a lower shell portion and an upper shell portion. The lower shell portion is pivotally coupled to the upper shell portion to permit the shell assembly to be alternately positioned in a substantially planar configuration and in an angled configuration. The coupling means comprises locking means for selectively locking the shell assembly in either the planar configuration or the angled con- figuration. The lower shell portion includes a base portion to support the device on a vehicle seat.
