ABSTRACT In a bio-reactor for the treatment of sewage waters or se- wage sludges the air is fed by means of a subsurface aera- tor into its upper part and the microbubbles produced are transported with a defined velocity of flow into the lower horizontal part of the reactor. In the riser part of the reactor pulsations and microwhirls are produced in order to hinder the coalescence of the microbubbles and to increase the rate of exchange between gas and liquid. The reactor comprises a downcomer part, the section of which being many times smaller than the one of the riser part. In the upper part a subsurface aerator is arranged and in the riser part there are provided corrugated-pipe- similar obstacles for producing pulsations and microwhirls. The device further comprises a heat exchanger as well as an adjusting and control device for the water, respeetively the gas inlet. The water outlet comprises an outgassing de- vice. If necessary, an agitator may be included. With such a process it is possible to reduce the volume of the construction and the expenditure of energy while the entered oxygen power is many times enhanced and a maximum utilization of the oxygen is obtained.
