Abstract: The present invention is related to a switch. The switch is comprised of first and second regions which have a first conductivity type and first and second bandgaps. The regions have an interface which is adapted to the formation of an inversion layer. A third region is provided which has a second conductivity type and a third bandgap. The second bandgap is less than the first and third bandgaps. Electrical contacts are provided to the first and at least one of the second and third regions. Finally, an arrangement is provided for illuminating the second region.
