- 1 - ABSTRACT A motor especially for use in downhole drilling for straight or directional drilling, the motor being powered by supply of fluid such as drill mud under pressure and having a mandrel rotatably mounted within a housing, the mandrel and housing each have respective pathways formed along their opposing faces in a manner whereby the pathways are differently directed. Drive means such as balls are provided at the intersections of the pathways and are forced along between the mandrel and housing by the pres- surised fluid, thereby causing the mandrel to rotate rela- tive to the housing. The mandrel may have a drill bit assembly or other rotational equipment connected to it.
