ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A catalyst comprising a mixture of WCl6 and WOCl4 is prepared by controlled oxidation of WCl6 using, as an oxygen donor, t-butanol, water vapor, a hydrated inorganic salt or a wet molecular sieve. The product is an effective catalyst for ring opening polymerization of norbornene-type cycloolefins.
