The present invention provides 3-(4-substituted phenoxy)-3-phenyl propanamines which have the general formula Image I wherein: R1 is (C1-C2 alkyl)-S(O)p-, CF3S-, CF3O-, H2NCO-, H2NSO2-, or CH3SO2NH-; R2 is hydrogen or methyl; p is 0, 1, or 2. Also provided by the present invention are pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts of the above compounds, and also pharmaceutical formulations comprising compounds of Formula 1 as recited above as the active ingredient, in association with one or more pharmaceutically acceptable carriers therefor. These compounds are selected serotonin uptake inhibitors, and thus can be used for treatment of disorders linked to decreased neurotransmission of serotonin in mammals.
