ABSTRACT A method for extracting furfural, formic acid, arctic acid and other organic components from acidic hydrolysates of pentosan-containing plant material, which hydrolysates contain pentoses, comprising the steps of convert- ing the pentoses into furfural under acidic conditions in a reactor and a counterflow heat exchanger; removing hot reaction mixture from the reactor and passing it in heat exchange relationship to the incoming pentose-containing material, thereby heating the latter and cooling the reaction mixture; and thereafter recovering furfural together with formic acid and acetic acid by distillation from the cooled reaction mixture.
