ABSTRACT Novel steroid compounds of the formula: Image or a 1,2-dehydro or 6,7-dehydro derivative thereof, wherein R3 is hydrogen, hydroxy, alkoxy, aryloxy, oxo, methylene, alkylthio, arylthio, alkanoyl, alkanoyloxy or fluorine; R4 is carbonyl, .beta.-hydroxymethylene or .beta.-acetyl- oxymethylene; R5 is hydrogen or halogen; and R6 is hydrogen, methyl, hydroxy, alkanoyl, al- kanoyloxy or halogen; which are useful as intermediates in the preparation of related steroids of the formula: Image and the 1,2-dehydro and 6,7-dehydro derivatives there- of, wherein one of R1 and R2 is alkyl, aryl, arylalkyl or cycloalkyl, and the other is alkenyl, sub- stituted alkenyl, alkynyl, substituted al- kynyl, mono-, di- or trifluoroalkyl, cyano- alkyl, alkanoylalkyl or -(CH2)n Image wherein n is 1, 2, 3 or 4 and Y1 and Y2 are the same or different and each is hydrogen or alkyl; and R3, R4, R5 and R6 have the meaning stated above. The latter steroids are useful by virtue of their topical anti-inflammatory activity.
