ABSTRACT A method of securing data recorded on a data support and a device for performing the method are disclosed. In addition to the basic information contained in the data recorded on the data support, selected individual characters of the recorded data defer from each other by their physical and/or chemical properties for providing an additional secret code. In one embodiment, individual characters printed on the data support defer from each other by contrast or half-tone density in a manner not visible to the human eye, but which may easily be detected by automatic reading. An authentic data support will be recognized through its secret code included in the particular physical or chemical properties of selected individual characters. The method prevents data supports from being duplicated or falsified.
