Crystalline, isotactic homopolymers of cycloolefins or elastic copolymers made from cycloolefins and linear olefins are obtained, without ring opening of the cycloole-fins, at industrially favorable polymerization temperatures by means of a catalyst which comprises a stereorigid, chiral metallocene compound of groups IVb to Vlb of the Periodic Table of the Elements and an aluminoxane.
