ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A magneto-optical recording and reproducing device comprising an optical head is provided with a laser beam source, for generating a laser beam and focusing the laser beam onto a magneto-optical recording medium with a magnetic substance film of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, a magnetic coil generating an alternating magnetic field according to data to be recorded, for forming positive magnetized parts having a predetermined direction of magnetization, and negative magnetized parts having the opposite direction of magnetization than said positive magnetized parts, recording and reproducing data by existence or absence of said negative magnetized parts, and a laser beam control means for controlling the intensity of said laser beam to be higher when rewriting the positive magnetized parts than when rewriting the negative magnetized parts, for obtaining the width of said positive magnetized parts greater than the width of the negative magnetized parts. Hence, this device can prevent the false signals and incorrect detection due to a residual negative magnetized domain reminiscent from the negative magnetized domain formed by the old data, when reproducing data recorded according to the existence or absence of the negative magnetized parts, that is, according to the existence or absence, length, position etc. of the negative magnetized domain comprising of the negative magnetized parts. Consequently, the reliability of recording and reproducing of data can be improved.
