ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A relatively safe and stable acetylene base fuel gas of enhanced BTU output is prepared, without formation of undesirable by-products, through the reaction of a carbide, such as calcium carbide, with a liquid activator comprised of water, a water-soluble rate-controlling-substance, and a strong inorganic acid. The resulting fuel gas includes a composition which acts as a top cylinder lubricant for an internal combustion engine and thus is suitable for powering such an engine or a power plant. Preferably, the calcium carbide employed is provided with an air and moisture impermeable coating, which is degraded upon contact by the activator.
