A process of inhibiting the renin angiotensinogen angiotensin mechanism and treating hypertension includes the step of administering a blood pressure lowering amount to a mammal of a protease inhibitor peptide obtained by the cleavage of pepsinogen. Hypertension is also treated by orally administering a blood pressure lowering amount of a dried stomach mucosa and an acidifying agent. A stomach mucosa extract is obtained under mild conditions in an extracting solvent containing an acidifying agent.
