A dispersion strengthened mechanically alloyed aluminium based alloy is provided which is prepared by mechanical alloying and is characterised by improved isotropic strength, fracture toughness and corrosion resistance. The alloy system contains by weight 1.2 to 1.6 % lithium, 4.0 to 6.0 % magnesium, 0.15 to 0.7 % carbon, up to 1 % oxygen and up to 2.0 % in total of one or more grain controlling elements to provide microstructural optimisation and control, the balance aluminium save for incidental impurities.

Cette invention a trait à un alliage à base d'aluminium, allié mécaniquement, à durcissement par phase dispersée. Cet alliage, qui est mis au point par alliage mécanique, se caractérise par une résistance isotrope, une ténacité et une résistance à la corrosion améliorées. Il contient, en pourcentage pondéral, de 1,2 à 1,6 % de lithium, de 4,0 à 6,0 % de magnésium, de 0,15 à 0,7 % de carbone, jusqu'à 1 % d'oxygène et jusqu'à 2 % en totalité d'un ou de plusieurs éléments agissant sur le grain, destinés à agir sur la microstructure et à l'optimiser, le reste étant constitué d'aluminium, exception faite des impuretés imprévues.
