Systems and methods are disclosed for treating biological fluids carrying contaminants by photoactivating materials mixed with the fluids. The system (10) comprises a vessel (12) having a transparent region and containing a solution (14) comprising a photoactive material which undergoes reduction oxidation in response to exposure to a prescribed light energy, and a reducing agent mixed with the photoactive material.
