A method of communicating data between two correspondents, preferably a pair of facsimile machines, the method comprising the steps of transmitting a set of attributes between the correspondents, the attributes being indicative of the capability of the correspondents; exchanging within respective public key certificates of the correspondents; establishing a common session key between the correspondents, the key including attribute, identification and public key information of the respective correspondents; and one of the correspondents encrypting a message using the common session key and transmitting the message to the other correspondent for decryption.
