A conductive polymer composition exhibiting PTC behavior and the method of making the composition are disclosed. The composition includes a particulate conductive filler and a polymeric portion. The polymeric portion contains a volume-expansion-regulating high molecular weight polymer, such as ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), that resists melting and causes an increase in the volume of the composition, upon heating, but migrates minimally within the composition. The high molecular weight polymer preferably has a linear thermal expansion coefficient of at least 200 x 10-6/ ~C. The polymeric portion also contains a melt-extrudable polyolefin matrix in which the conductive filler and the high molecular weight polymer are dispersed. The high molecular weight polymer is present in an amount which allows the final composition to be melt-extrudable. An electrical device containing a PTC element that utilizes the novel composition and at least two electrodes is also disclosed. The resulting materials are applicable to switch devices, self- limiting heaters, EMI, ESD, utility, and telecommunications components.
Composition de polymère conducteur à C.T.P. et son procédé de fabrication. La composition comporte une charge conductrice particulaire et une partie polymère. La partie polymère contient un polymère de masse molaire élevée régulant le volume/l'expansion, tel qu'un polyéthylène à masse molaire très élevée, qui résiste à la fusion et induit une augmentation du volume de la composition sous l'effet de la chaleur, mais migre le moins possible dans la composition. Le polymère à masse molaire élevée présente, de préférence, un coefficient d'expansion thermique linéaire d'au moins 200 x 10?-6¿/ ·C. La partie polymère contient également une matrice polyoléfinique pouvant être extrudée à l'état fondu, dans laquelle la charge conductrice et le polymère à masse molaire élevée sont dispersés. Le polymère à masse molaire élevée est présent dans des proportions permettant à la composition finale d'être extrudée à l'état fondu. Un dispositif électrique contenant l'élément PTC dans lequel la nouvelle composition est utilisée ainsi qu'au moins deux électrodes, est également décrit. Les matériaux résultants sont applicables à des dispositifs de commutation, des dispositifs de chauffage auto-limitants, aux interférences électromagnétiques, aux décharges électrostatiques, aux installations de servitude et à des composants de télécommunications.
