The invention is a linear actuator incorporating rolling element bearings to guide a square inner tube as it extends and retracts from the outer tube (main body) of the actuator. A nut is attached to the inner tube and is driven by a threaded drive screw upon which the nut is mounted. One set of rolling element bearings is affixed to the trailing end of the square inner tube and rolls in contact with the outer tube, while another set of rolling element bearings is affixed to the main body and rolls in contact with the inner tube were it exits the outer tube, resulting in a high side load capacity and resistance to twist of the inner tube. In one embodiment of this inventive concept, the actuator is vertically mounted for raising, holding and lowering applications and in another it is horizontally mounted for general applications.
