A recording medium having an ink-receiving layer containing a pigment and being formed on a support. The pigment is composed mainly of a pigment component having a specific surface area within the range of from 30 to 150 m/g and an oil absorption value within the range of 2.0 to 5.0 cc/g; and the recording medium has a roughness index K.gamma. (m1/m) and an absorption coefficient K.alpha. (m.sec-) according to Bristow test, respectively within the ranges of 10 ? K.gamma. ? 30, and 5.0 x 10-6 ? K.alpha. ? 3.5 x 10-5. A method of color ink jet recording by application of droplets of a recording liquid onto the recording medium.
