A dental impression composition, dental impression pre- form, dental impression tray, a functional dental impression device and method for taking a dental impression. The impression material is an ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer that has about 30% to 45% by weight vinyl acetate. The preferred dental impression material includes a modifier polymer selected from the group consisting of a second ethylene vinyl acetate, ethylene vinyl acetate vinyl alcohol ester, vinyl acetate, polyvinyl acetate, and mixtures thereof. The composition is preferably heat and pressure treated -- i.e., by being pressure extruded. The preform softens at a temperature of about 120°F to 170°F and is hard at a temperature of 110°F.
