The invention relates to a process for preparing 2-para-dioxanones by the catalytic dehydrogenation of dialkylene glycols, which process comprises: contacting a dialkylene glycol at a temperature within the range of 200 °C to 400 °C with an effective amount of the dehydrogenation catalyst comprising catalytically effective amounts of a copper compound, a zinc compound and a promoter compound selected from the group consisting of salts, compounds and complexes of alkali metals and alkaline earth metals and mixtures thereof supported on an alumina and to the dehydrogenation catalyst used.
