Apparatus for printing on sheet material comprising a printing head, feeding means for moving the printing head and sheet material to be printed upon relative on one another during a printing operation, a replaceable web movable between the printing head and the sheet material to be printed upon and carrying a printing ink that is selectively transferred to the sheet material by the printing head during a printing operation to generate graphic images on the material, coding means associated with the replaceable web and having a code for identifying printing characteristics of the web which characteristics differ from one replaceable web to another, code sensing means for detecting the code of the coding means, and printing control means connected to the printing head and the feeding means and responsive to the code sensing means for controlling the printing operation in accordance with the code and printing characteristics of the web.
