ABSTRACT HAND HELD FLUID CUTTER A hand held cutter using fluid as the cutting medium. A magnetostrictive rod is included to provide the activating force on the piston. The magnetostrictive rod includes a central longitudinal bore for accommodating fluid flow therethrough. One end of the rod contacts the head of a differential piston having a longitudinal bore of a reduced diameter relative to the rod. The shaft of the piston is associated with a series of check valves to permit liquid flow in only one direction. In use, the cutter is connected to a non pressurized liquid source which introduces liquid into the center of the rod. When an AC current is applied to the coil sets a magnetic field is established along the rod. The rod in response to a magnetic field in one direction expands in length an amount determined by the flux density, rod type and rod length. When the polarity of the flux changes to the opposite direction, the rod contracts. The expanding and contracting rod and a spring causes the piston to reciprocate to force the liquid from the cutter at high pressure due to its reduction of the internal diameter of the bore.
