ABSTRACT A process for preparing a vicinal epoxide and an alkyl halide or alkylene dihalide, by reacting a car- bonate ester of the formula Image (I) or Image (II) wherein R1 to R4 and R6 to R9 are each hydrogen, a hydro- carbon group and -CH2X, R5 is alkyl, R6 to R9 can each be -CH2Y, and each of the pairs R1, R2 and R6, R7 may together from an alkylene group of 3-6 carbon atoms, each X is Cl or Br and Y is an alkoxy or aroxy group, with a quarternary ammonium or phosphonium salt catalyst.
