Some devices on modern-day, communications networks are unaware of their own address. Specifically, API are not provided to allow access to the internal address of the proprietary device. Many communications applications require peer-to-peer communication without a gateway, proxy, router or other middleware in between. This is not possible without the device discovering its own internal address. This invention enables devices to discover their own internal address thereby facilitating such communication. The invention is a three-phase communications protocol between a device that does not know its own address (dumb device), another device on the same internal network that does know its own address (smart device) and, an Internet DNS-like service. The process yields the unknown address to the smart device, which returns the address to the dumb device, enabling self discovery of a device's internal address.
