A solid fuel combustor in which a fuel is gasified into a producer gas and ash residue by reacting the fuel with a gasification medium supplied from an under- grate source, and in which the producer gas is further combusted either in the gasification chamber or in a secondary combustor to yield heat and a source of hot flue gas. The combustor includes a humidifier that uses a portion of the hot flue gas to vaporize water in an evaporation chamber and supplies the water vapor to the gasification medium in the under-grate source for the purpose of cooling the ash to prevent the formation of clinker. A reciprocating ash removal assembly having parallel ash arms mounted on a bar moves the ash residue that builds up on the grate towards a discharge bin to prevent excess ash build up in the combustor.
