Optical devices (10, 40) are provided for optical signal modulation of light propagating in a waveguide core surrounded by polymeric cladding regions which include chromophores, under the control of an electrical signal propagating along a traveling wave electrode structure. The microwave electrode structure comprises a coplanar stripline including a control signal electrode (75) interposed between a pair of ground plane electrodes (72, 74). Each of the microwave ground plane electrodes is connected to a positive or negative DC bios source (+Vblas, -Vbias) and is coupled from the microwave signal input (44) by means of DC blocking capacitors (76). The ground electrode portions (72~, 74~) isolated from the signal input and output can be used to align the chromophores by applying a bias voltage at a temperature near the glass transition temperature of the polymer. The present invention also contemplates provision of a coplanar stripline as described and claimed herein.

L'invention concerne des dispositifs optiques (10, 40) pour moduler les signaux optiques d'une lumière se propageant dans un coeur de guide d'ondes entouré par des zones de gaine polymère comportant des chromophores, sous la commande d'un signal électrique se propageant le long d'une structure d'électrode à onde progressive. La structure d'électrode à micro-ondes comprend une microbande coplanaire qui comporte une électrode de signal de commande (75) disposée entre une paire d'électrodes de plan de masse (72, 74). Chacune des électrodes de plan de masse à micro-ondes est reliée à une source de polarisation en courant continu positive ou négative (+Vbias, -Vbias) et est découplée à partir de l'entrée de signal micro-onde (44) au moyen de condensateurs de blocage en courant continu (76). Les parties d'électrode de masse (72', 74') isolées de l'entrée et de la sortie des signaux peuvent être utilisées pour aligner les chromophores, par application d'une tension de polarisation à une température proche de la température de transition vitreuse du polymère. La présente invention se rapporte en outre à une microbande coplanaire.
