The present invention relates to a method and composition for treating patients who are receiving hemodialysis and/or peritoneal dialysis treatments. The method includes administering to a patient in need of treatment prior to or while undergoing dialysis, an effective amount of a thiol or reducible disulfide compound according to formula (II) as set forth within the Specification. The composition includes a dialysis solution and an effective amount of a thiol or reducible disulfide compound according to formula (II).
