The present invention provides two novel human galectins (designated individually as GAL-5HA and GAL-5HB, and collectively as GAL-5H) and polynucleotides which identify and encode GAL-5H. The invention also provides genetically engineered expression vectors and host cells comprising the nucleic acid sequences encoding GAL-5H and a method for producing GAL-5H. The invention also provides for use of GAL-5H and agonists, antibodies, or antagonists specifically binding GAL-5H, in the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with expression of GAL-5H. Additionally, the invention provides for the use of antisense molecules to polynucleotides encoding GAL-5H for the treatment of diseases associated with the expression of GAL-5H. The invention also provides diagnostic assays which utilize the polynucleotide, or fragments or the complement thereof, and antibodies specifically binding GAL- 5H.
Cette invention concerne deux nouvelles galectines humaines (qui individuellement sont appelées GAL-5HA et GAL-5HB et collectivement GAL-5H) et des polynucléotides qui identifient et codent pour GAL-5H. Cette invention concerne également des vecteurs d'expression produits par génie génétique et des cellules hôtes comprenant les séquences d'acides nucléiques qui codent pour GAL-5H ainsi qu'un procédé de production de GAL-5H; l'utilisation de GAL-5H et d'agonistes, d'anticorps ou d'antagonistes se liant spécifiquement à GAL-5H dans la prévention et le traitement de maladies associées à l'expression de GAL-5H; l'utilisation de molécules anti-sens s'opposant aux polynucléotides codant pour GAL-5H pour traiter des maladies associées à l'expression de GAL-5H; et des dosages diagnostiques dans lesquels on utilise le polynucléotide ou des fragments de ce dernier ou enocre son complément et des anticorps se liant spécifiquement à GAL-5H.
