The present invention provides a method and apparatus for controlling the internal body temperature of a patient. According to the present invention, a catheter (20) is inserted into a large blood vessel of a patient. By selectively heating or cooling a portion (15) of the catheter lying within the blood vessel, the patient's body temperature may be increased or decreased as desired. The invention will find use in treating undesirable conditions of hypothermia or hyperthermia, or for inducing a condition of artificial hypothermia when desired. The method and system further provide for the cooling of initially hyperthermic patients whose blood or body temperature has been cooled below the desired target temperature.

Méthode et dispositif de régulation de la température interne du corps d'un patient. Un cathéter (20) est introduit dans un gros vaisseau sanguin du patient. En chauffant ou en refroidissant un secteur (15) du cathéter situé à l'intérieur du vaisseau sanguin, on peut, à volonté, accroître ou abaisser la température du corps du patient. Cette invention devrait trouver des applications dans le traitement des états indésirables d'hypothermie ou d'hyperthermie ou bien pour induire un état artificiel d'hypothermie. La méthode et le système portent en outre sur le refroidissement de patients en état initial d'hyperthermie ou dont la température corporelle a été abaissée en deça de la température cible souhaitée.
