A safety shoe sole arranged to include a penetration resistant cloth member is described. The penetration resistant cloth member comprises one or more layers of woven textile formed from a high tensile strength synthetic fibre such as Kevlar (TM). The woven textile includes unidirectional ribs which are arranged such that the ribs are meshed, thereby providing greater resistance to puncture. As a result of this arrangement, the sole is as resistant to penetrating objects as a sole including a metal plate, but is more flexible and not heat conductive and therefore more comfortable.
