Disclosed are a polymer powder comprising a polymer (such as nylon-12) and a phosphonate-containing flame retardant, to be used in a layer-by-layer process for selectively melting or binding target regions to form a molding such as a prototype. Compared with conventional products, the molding constructed using the powder of the invention exhibits marked advantages in flammability and combustibility and drop behavior, particularly with respect to UL (Underwriters Laboratories) classification. Furthermore, the molding produced from the polymer powder of the invention has adequately good mechanical properties when compared with moldings based on polymer powders without flame retardant, in particular in terms of modulus of elasticity and tensile strain at break. In addition, the molding also has a density close to that of injection moldings.
