Chelating resins for use in selectively binding heavy metals, having the structure (see formula I) where Ps represents a poly(divinylbenzene), and R represents an organic radical containing N but not O that is bound to the S atom. The preparation of these chelating resins is also disclosed. Suitable uses of the chelating resins of the invention include as components in a process for treatment of acid mine drainage (AMI) to selectively recover valuable metals and to obtain discharge water free of toxic metals.
