ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE HOE 90/F 301 The invention relates to genes for the production of virus resistant plants. The gene encodes a sequence which can act as initiation sequence for the synthesis of a complementary RNA and which is subsequently coupled to an antisense sequence which allows a cap-independent translation in the sense orientation, and with an antisense sequence which encodes a protein which is destructive to the metabolism of a plant, in the sense orientation. After a virus has attacked the cell the RNA is transcribed into a complementary RNA by means of the viral replicase, or it is also possible that the RNA is transcribed into a complementary RNA by means of a replicase activated in the cell via a different mechanism and the information for a cell-destructive enzyme, which is now present in the sense orientation, is read off.
