A submergible system is disclosed which includes a submergible electric motor drivingly coupled to a progressive cavity pump. The motor and pump are driven at the same speeds without the need for a torque-multiplying device therebetween. The motor may be a brushless permanent magnet motor coupled to the pump through a motor protector. A power supply cable is couplet to the pumping system from the earth s surface. A switching circuit is provided adjacent to the motor to receive direct current power via the cable and to apply the power to the motor. The motor may be started from a static condition by applying electrical power via the cable sufficient to overcome the relatively high starting torque of the pump, without the need to reverse or otherwise preload the system. Thereafter, the flow rate of the pumping system may be controlled both in a low speed range of operation of the motor as well as in a higher speed range.
