A modular apparatus for treating contaminated water uses a standard container. Depending upon the type of module which is placed inside the container, different types of water treatment can be provided. If a divider module is inserted, the container is turned into a water treatment apparatus to clarify liquids. If a bioreactor support module together with a bioreactor housing module are placed inside the container, the container is turned into a water treatment apparatus to biologically treat liquids.
