ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for the simultaneous removal of bases and sulphur from phenols. Crude phenol, as well as individual phenol fractions from tars or from the hydrogenation of coals, have contaminating organic bases and sulphur compounds removed from them if the phenols are thermally processed with phthalic acid anhydride and optionally a chinon, and distilled.
