An optical transmitter, an optical receiver and an optical transceiver are described. The transmitter and receiver pair provides a very high speed interconnect link for parallel fibre applications. The pair, together with a multi-mode parallel fibre ribbon cable constitutes a complete parallel fibre link. The link provides high speed interconnects for use within and between large capacity switches. The optical transceiver including both transmitters and receivers also finds application in parallel fibre configurations. A pair of transceivers together with a multi-mode parallel fibre ribbon cable constitute a complete, fully bi-directional parallel fibre link.
