The invention concerns a method for determining the water content (Wv%) of a material (12) using electromagnetic waves, comprising the following steps: applying an electromagnetic wave; measuring the propagation time (T) of a surface electromagnetic wave (26) between two points (10, 28); calculating the dielectric constant (.epsilon.') of said material (12) on the basis of said propagation time (T); determining the dry density (.gamma.d) of the material (12); and calculating the water content (Wv%) of said material (12) from the dielectric constant (.epsilon.') and said dry density (.gamma.d). The invention also concerns a device for determining water content (Wv%) using two antennae (10, 20), means (44) for measuring the travel time (T) and processing means (48).

L'invention concerne un procédé de détermination de la teneur en eau (W¿v?%) d'un matériau (12) à l'aide d'ondes éelectromagnétiques, comprenant les étapes suivantes: on applique une onde électromagnétique, on mesure le temps de propagation (T) d'une onde éelectromagnétique de surface (26) entre deux points (10, 28), on calcule la constante diélectrique (.epsilon.') dudit matériau (12) à partir dudit temps de propagation (T), on détermine la masse voluminique sèche (.gamma.¿d?) du matériau (12) et, on calcule la teneur en eau (W¿v?%) dudit matériau (12) à partir de ladite constante diélectrique (.epsilon.') et de ladite masse voluminique sèche (.gamma.¿d?). L'invention concerne un dispositif qui permet de déterminer cette teneur en eau(W¿v?%) à l'aide de deux antennes (10, 20), de moyens (44) pour mesurer le temps de parcours (T) et de moyens de traitement (48).
