A sidewall for a mattress pad is formed from a multi-layer structure which includes a flexible net intimately joined with, and sandwiched between, two outer layers of fabric. The flexible net includes spaced vertical elastic yarns, and spaced horizontal, substantially inelastic yarns which intersect and are bonded to the vertical yarns. Horizontally extending gathers are permanently formed in the outer layers of fabric. The gathers and the vertical elastic yarns allow for significant vertical stretch of the sidewall so that the mattress pad can accommodate mattresses with different thicknesses or heights. A method for manufacturing sidewall material includes a step of adhering the three layers together and shrinking the vertical elastic yarns to create the permanent gathers in the outer layers of fabric.
