The present invention provides a plug (1400) for a respiratory suction catheter (208) and manifold (204) assembly that protects or maintains at least one internal component, such as the flap (232), of an assembly during nonuse. In a preferred embodiment, the interior plug element (1401) functions or contains a spring or similar expanding mechanism. This provides for additional security for the internal components. Further, the plug (1400) may contain an exterior plug element (1402) as well as an interior plug element (1401).
