A video image capturing system includes a computer system and a video camera system under the control of the computer system. The video camera system includes a video camera, pan/tilt position for the camera and a video light, all controlled by the computer system. The computer system includes a computer with monitor and video memory and a video interface card. The video interface card interfaces with the computer via an internal bus and via the camera system via a serial port. Software modules in the computer set-up the camera for a photo session and operate the photo session in automatic, operation assisted and live photo session modes. The system allows high throughput with a high consistency in quality for applications such as photo ID cards.
