A correction method for use with a pen based computer system includes the steps of receiving an insertion point coor-dinate; receiving an initial pen down coordinate corresponding to an initial pen down; receiving a present pen down coordinate corresponding to a present position of a pen; receiving a pen up coordinate corresponding to a pen up; defining an ordered set of points between and including the initial pen down coordinate and the pen up coordinate; determining a first time interval between the pen up and the initial pen down; determining a second time interval between the initial pen down and the present pen down; determining if the relative position of at least two of the initial pen down coordinate, the present pen down coordinate, the pen up coordinate, the first time interval, the second time interval and the ordered set of points corresponds to a set of pre-selected parameters which correspond to activation of one or a plurality of modes; and activating the mode. The different modes include input mode, punctuation mode, correction mode, edit mode and selection mode. A stroke or path drawn in a mode will be compared with pre-selected groups of characters used in association with that mode. By dividing functions into different modes the reliability of recognition of the stroke will be increased.

Ledit procédé consiste à recevoir les coordonnées de points d'insertion ; à recevoir les coordonnées initiales de stylet abaissé correspondant à l'abaissement initial d'un stylet ; à recevoir les coordonnées réelles du stylet abaissé, correspondant à la position réelle d'un stylet ; à recevoir les coordonnées du stylet relevé, correspondant à un stylet relevé ; à définir un ensemble ordonné de points entre les coordonnées initiales de stylet abaissé et les coordonnées de stylet relevé et les incluant ; à déterminer un premier intervalle de temps entre la position relevée du stylet et la position abaissée initiale du stylet ; à déterminer un deuxième intervalle de temps entre la position abaissée initiale du stylet et la position abaissée réelle du stylet ; à déterminer si la position relative d'au moins deux parmi les coordonnées initiales de stylet abaissé, les coordonnées réelles de stylet abaissé, les coordonnées de stylet relevé, le premier intervalle de temps, le deuxième intervalle de temps, l'ensemble ordonné de points correspondant à un ensemble de paramètres présélectionnés qui correspondent à l'activation d'un des modes multiples; et à activer le mode. Les différents modes comprennent le mode d'entrée, le mode de ponctuation, le mode de correction, le mode d'édition et le mode de sélection. Un segment ou un trajet dessiné dans un mode est comparé à des groupes présélectionnés de caractères utilisés conjointement avec ce mode. Par la division des fonctions en différents modes, la fiabilité de reconnaissance du segment est accrue.
