A gas detector for use with a vehicle, for example a helicopter or motor vehicle, in which a laser absorption cell is carried on the exterior of the vehicle, and a laser transceiver and analyzer module is coupled to the laser absorption cell through light guides, for example optical fibers. The laser absorption cell preferably has the form of a Herriot cell, with opposed mirrors carried by a rigid frame, and with an open passageway for flow of air between the mirrors directly from the atmosphere through the laser absorption cell. Windows and/or a screen or other devices may be used to protect the mirrors from contamination. A method of detecting a target gas, comprising traversing a target area with a vehicle having an exterior; passing air through a laser absorption cell carried on the exterior of the vehicle; directing light through the laser absorption cell; and analyzing light that has passed through the laser absorption cell for a signal indicative of the presence of the target gas.
