Apparatus and method are provided for temporarily enhancing traction of the rear wheels of a vehicle comprising removeably coupling ballast to a standard trailer hitch receiver. A transverse extending ballast member is secured to a short axial tongue which is coupled or de-coupled to the receiver. Preferably, the ballast is preferably a heavy transverse extending member, such as a piece of railroad rail or filled polygonal tubing. The axial tongue member may further extend rearwardly for affixing a hitch ball. The tongue is alternately restrained to the receiver using aligned ports in the receiver and the tongue for accepting a cross pin and cotter. In slippery conditions, the ballast is coupled to the receiver for increasing the normal force at the driving wheels. When conditions improve, the ballast is easily removed so as to reduce vehicle wear and lessen environmental impact. The ballast is preferably stored on a caster support for ensuring substantial alignment with the receiver for avoiding lifting and positioning difficulties.
