A call setup signal is routed to the gateway mobile switching center (GMSC) serving a public land mobile network (PLMN) associated with a called mobile station. The GMSC then sends a signal including data identifying the originating switch to the home location register (HLR) associated with the called mobile station. Upon determining that it would be more efficient and direct for the originating switch to release the first call connection to the GMSC and to re-originate a new call setup signal directly towards the mobile switching center (MSC) currently serving the called mobile station, the HLR transmits a Mobile Application Part (MAP) based signal to the originating switch. As a result the originating switch releases the original call connection and re- originates a call setup signal using a roaming number identifying the MSC currently serving the mobile station as a destination address.
