A particulate composition comprises particles having a substantially anhydrous core comprising a matrix polymer contain- ing active ingredient, a layer of hydrophobic oil around the core and a shell of polymer around the oil layer, wherein the solid ma- trix polymer is sufficiently hydrophobic that it will partition preferentially into the oil rather than into water. The composition can be a powder or a stable liquid dispersion. The active ingredient is preferably a detergent enzyme and the composition can there- fore be a stable liquid laundry detergent. The composition can be made by providing an aqueous solution of encapsulating po- lymer, providing a substantially anhydrous dispersion in oil of particles of a matrix polymer containing active ingredient, dispers- ing this dispersion into the aqueous solution and causing a solid polymer shell to form around the droplets of the matrix particles.
