SYNCHRONOUS CELL SWITCH Abstract of the Disclosure Synchronous cell switches in non-expanded, as well as expanded, configurations for STM operation and the method of switching data cells through the unexpanded and expanded cell switches are disclosed. In the unexpanded topology, a new type of common memory switch processes data streams formatted into data cells. In the expanded topology, the switches include a plurality of common memory switching modules arranged in groups of three stages. Each module has enough programmable memory. The modules at the first and the third stages function as commutator or distributor. The switching action takes place only in the modules at the central stage. The modules are controlled as to read and write addresses in order to perform as commutator. The use of common memory switching modules for commutation at the first and third stages enables easy and gradual expansions in the switch capacity. - i -
