The invention concerns a method of determining whether a particle (14) is or includes a diamond. In the method, the particle is irradiated with an X-ray beam (17) and elastically scattered radiation from the particle (14) is detected. A Laue diffraction spot pattern is then derived and a determination is made as to whether the particle is or includes a diamond from the distribution of spot intensities in the derived pattern.
