In order to determine the filling height of a product in a tank (20), the electromagnetic radiation emitted by the tank is examined. Said radiation has a wavelength in the infrared range of 1 µm to 1 mm. The temperature of the tank upper part is different from that of the tank lower part. The difference of temperature stems from the fact that the tank is heated or cooled from outside.

Ce rayonnement a une longueur d'onde dans la gamme infrarouge comprise entre 1 µm et 1 mm. La température de la partie supérieure du réservoir que ne contient rien est différente de celle de la partie inférieure. Cette différence de température vient du fait que le réservoir est chauffé ou refroidi de l'extérieur.
